What’s Changed?

Previously, a master’s degree was mandatory to apply for a PhD program. Now, students with a four-year undergraduate degree can apply directly, provided they meet certain criteria. This opens doors for those who are passionate about research and want to begin their PhD journey sooner.

Key Points to Remember:

• Eligibility: You’ll need a four-year undergraduate degree with a minimum of 75% marks (or equivalent) to be eligible for PhD programs through the National Eligibility Test (NET). There’s a 5% relaxation for reserved categories.
• NET Exam: The NET exam will be conducted in offline mode on June 16th, 2024. You can appear for the NET in a subject aligned with your PhD interests.
• Subject Choice: You can pursue a PhD in a subject different from your undergraduate major, allowing for more flexibility and interdisciplinary research.
• Master’s Degrees Still Valuable: Don’t worry, Master’s degrees are not going anywhere! They offer specialized knowledge and can be a great option for those seeking career advancement or needing to fulfill specific program requirements.

Is a Four-Year Degree Enough?

The four-year degree program is designed to provide a strong foundation for research. However, if you don’t meet the 75% mark requirement, you can still pursue a PhD by completing a one-year Master’s program first. The UGC is also encouraging universities to offer more one-year Master’s programs to accommodate this change.
