AU to start PhD in 3 foreign languages

Allahabad University (AU) has announced that it will start offering PhD programs in three foreign languages – French, Russian, and German for the first time. The addition of these languages would enable students to pursue doctoral studies in foreign languages for the first time. The programs can be included on the list of PhD subjects in the Combined Research Entrance Test (CRET)-2023. It is a significant step for AU towards facilitating research work, promoting language learning, and meeting the growing demand of Indian students to study foreign languages. Last year, the University had appointed three assistant professors specialized in foreign languages, namely Kanchan Chakraborty for French, Prashant Kumar Pandey for German, and Mona Agnihotri for Russian. This initiative also indicates the increasing importance of foreign language learning in the academic and professional spheres.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has granted permission for assistant professors to enroll PhD students even during their probation period. This change in policy means that even teachers who have not yet completed their one-year probation can now have PhD students under them, which will lead to an increase in the number of PhD seats available. The University’s Administration is now preparing for the second stage of admission after 1889 candidates were found eligible for the 734 seats in 43 subjects in the first stage. With the new framework for conducting PhD in three languages, PhD courses will be available in Hindi, English, Urdu, Arabic-Persian, Sanskrit, French, German, and Russian. After the PhD admission process is complete, vacant seats data will be updated, and the application process for CRET-2023 will begin.
